English Tutoring in Bristol

Welcome to EXTRA ENGLISH

I teach children from my home in south bristol in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

I teach all key stages from the ages of 5-16years.

I work closely with The National Curriculum but am able to focus in more depth on a child's particular difficulties.

Area I cover are:

spelling
creative writing
punctuation
comprehension
sats
entrance exams,11+
G.C.S.E.

I have been teaching in primary.secondary and adult education for the last 27years. I graduated from Exeter University with a 2:1[honours].

I was awarded a place at Goldsmiths college, University of London,to study for a P.G.C.E.[postgraduate certicate of education].

I teach children in small, friendly groups from my home in Upper Totterdown, South Bristol.

Children get maximum teacher attention whilst benefiting from learning in a group. Many children find individual tutoring can be a bit stressful whereas small groups enable children to relax, see friendly faces each week and be influenced by other children who are concentrating and working hard.

There are never more than 7 in a group and quite often there are only 4 or 5.

The lessons last for one hour and twenty minutes and are £20-25 depending on age.
They are:

Wednesday evening 5.00pm-6.20pm

Sunday morning 9.00am-10.20am

Lessons are usually weekly as this creates the most progress. Sometimes a child can come fortnightly, and sometimes they can come twice a week if they are preparing for an exam or if its during the holidays.

If you are interested you would bring your child for an informal half an hour assesment. During this time I can discover your child's strengths and weaknesses and suggest an individual programme of work. This is also an opportunity for you to meet me, ask any questions and read my police check and testimonials from previous parents.

WHAT PARENTS HAVE SAID

Karen aged 16yrs

"We feel the English department at school were failing to deliver. Homework wasn't being marked and she wasn't encouraged to reach her full potential.
She has been coming for about 2 years. We have seen an all round improvement.
Her writing is more organised in English as well as other subject such as History, RE and Citizenship. Her GCSE target grade has improved from B to a predicted A and course work A.
I am impressed that she has always been keen to attend saying that she gets far more done with you in an hour and twenty minutes than she does in a week at school!"

Fatima aged 8yrs

"English is not our first language and we felt Fatima was behind. Also we could not help her with her homework.
We would like her to take the 11+ entrance exam. She now takes her work more seriously and concentrates for longer.
She is getting better marks a school which I think is helping her confidence. I would definitely recommend Debbie's Extra English lessons."

Jackie aged 11yrs

"Jackie had difficulty making up her own stories and this had effected her enjoyment of the subject.
However, after attending Debbie's lessons she now has excellent Sats results - level 5 at key stage 2 and level 3 at key stage 1. She is now much more confident and I will not hesitate to bring her back if she has another problem.
The lessons were excellent value and the price stayed the same over the years we have been coming."

Darren aged 5yrs

"Darren was not at the same level as his class mates and seemed to be struggle with simple words. He is now able to write (without help) most of the key words for his age.
We are so pleased with the improvement. His teachers said things would fall into place, but we are glad we acted when we did otherwise he would have been even more behind."

George aged 13yrs

"George was struggling with a lot of the basics in English, punctuation, spelling, sentence construction. He has been coming for about 18 months and now seems a lot more confident.
He was been encouraged with his spelling and makes less common mistakes. His use of language is effective and his creative writing is enjoyable to read. He know feels ready to do key stage 3 sats."

Why EXTRA ENGLISH?

I am a small personal service, not a large commercial enterprise.

Your child will see the same teacher each lesson[me!], not several different ones.

Your child will have the benefit of an experienced teacher of 27 years, not a teacher who has just graduated or someone who is not qualified.

Your child will be taught with resources mostly devised by myself specially tailored for your child's difficulties, not endless computer software which is given to every child.

Your child will have the interaction of a supportive relationship with an experienced teacher not the experience of sitting at a computer screen for an hour with little human interaction.

Your child's programme of work will be individually tailored not part of a step by step computer software programme.

DON'T DELAY...IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS HELP, THE SOONER HE/SHE COMES TO EXTRA ENGLISH THE SOONER THEY CAN IMPROVE.
